Psalm 100 (ESV)
A psalm. For giving thanks.
1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness;
come before him with joyful songs.
3 Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
This Psalm is a conclusion of the Kingship Psalms from Psalm 93-100. It is a descriptive praise which celebrates God’s person and his works in general. It exalts God for his kindness and unfailing love which occurs 127 times in Psalms.
Verse 1 begins with a Call to Praise for He is The King
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. This call evokes God as the King of all nations, all the people of the earth. Today, we are one nation under God but it is not limited to the United States of America, it goes beyond our boarders to the uttermost parts of the earth. It goes beyond cultural diversity and shows spiritual unity. It reveals that God is our King. God spoken to the nations through the faithfulness to Israel. Both Jew and Gentile serves under this King. We need to shout with a joyful noise to Him. Why do we need to make a joyful noise? This is the way, Solomon was greeted in his ascension to the throne, this is looking toward’s the Messiah’s ascension to the throne. Which we know today that He is upon the throne, sitting with his Father. May we give Him the praise that is due His mighty Name.
Verse 2, We are instructed in our Call to Praise Him
2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
We are to praise and serve Him with gladness, intimating that his kindness is towards His people is so great they He gives us abundant ground to rejoice. Where rebels were to serve the Lord with fear, here we are willing subjects to be invited. Serving and submitting to our wonderful King. The same word used in Psalm 72:11, May all kings fall down before Him all nations serve Him.
God is the King
Verse 3, We see our cause for Praise. He is our Creator and Shepherd
Know that the LORD is God.
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
He is Elohim as distinguished from other gods. He is the God of heaven and earth which shows his supremacy over all.
As Psalm 46:10 says, Be still and know that I am God, I will be exalted among the
nations. I will be exalted in the earth.
Deuteronomy 7:9 says, Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.
It is he who made us, and we are his; He is the one who made us in His image and formed us. He made us which includes adoption by grace as well as creation. the result making us His people and the sheep of His pasture.
Deuteronomy 26:18, And the Lord has declared today that you are a people for his treasured possession, as he has promised you, and that you are to keep his commandments.
Ephesians 2:8-10, For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one should boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Through regeneration and faith, We are his people, the sheep of his pasture, that God set apart for His heritage in order that He may nourish us under his wings. What a great privilege than merely being born. He gives us the same grace which once been
imparted to us, we continue safe and unimpaired until the end.
God is our Creator and Shepherd
Verse 4, How are we to praise Our Creator and Shepherd ?
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise
give thanks to him and praise His name.
The conclusion is almost the same as the beginning. We need to enter his gates with thankful hearts to God. We can never be at a loss for constant cause of praising Him. This is a prophetic verse looking toward the coming of the Messiah. The nations of the earth will gather to praise the Lord in the same Sanctuary.
Isaiah 66:18 says, For I know their works and their thoughts and the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and see my glory. He deserves our thankfulness and eternal praise for being our Creator and Shepherd. For redeeming us from the death we deserve.
Verse 5, God is good and God eternal
5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
This is our renewed call to praise. He is good because of the salvation He imparts to His people. The two features of His goodness are by his mercy and truth.
As Bernhard Anderson draws the conclusion, “Unlike the capricious gods of the ancient world, the God whom Israel worships is true to promises made, constant in faithfulness, consistent in behavior.”
Exodus 34:6-7 says, The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”
